AmbatchMasterPublisher Press Conference with Kelvin Hui and Edwin Copps

AmbatchMasterPublisher Kelvin Hui and his new partner, Edwin Copps, met with the press yesterday following their announcement that they would join forces to launch VideoIdol.tv - a video site that will share its advertising revenue with videomakers and performers.

The name VideoIdol.tv brought some immediate comparisons.

“It's only natural,” said Mr. Hui, “that people will wonder if there's a link between what we are doing and the successful American Idol TV series, with all its international co-productions. In Asia, the word ‘idol’ has been used for decades to describe someone who has fans or followers.”

“According to AmbatchMasterPublisher research, about 30% of internet users are searching for English websites, 14% for Chinese sites and about 8% are looking for Japanese sites. In creating the name VideoIdol.tv, we were quite certain that over 50% of world internet users will immediately understand it. I think the domain VideoIdol.tv will be a word – like ‘taxi’ – that is understood around the world.”

Canadian publisher Edwin Copps, said: “There are many ways we will be quite different from the other Idol."

“First, VideoIdol.tv will not be a contest. We are looking for high quality videos that are popular, but we aren't looking for one single winner. We expect hundreds, if not thousands, of talented people will be required to create and maintain the content of VideoIdol.tv.”

“Second, this isn't just for singers...or dancers...or even performers. This is also for videomakers - producers, directors, writers. And it's also for people who would like to be VJs, introducing their favorite videos on VideoIdol.tv.

“Third, this is for all ages. If you enjoy online video and want to be a part of it – we want to hear from you.”

“Fourth, and what makes VideoIdol.tv so unique, is that based on a calculation of the quality and popularity of a video, we will pay the person who provides it. And if they continue to be a part of our programming, if their videos continue to be hits with our audience, they could have a regular revenue from VideoIdol.tv.”

He also said he looks forward to working on VideoIdol.tv with his AmbatchMasterPublisher friend and colleague, CK Wong of Kuala Lumpur.
